Sleep, like a baby

WelcomZest Lounge
Dear Reader,

I hope you’ll enjoy this next post, because it concerns something we’re all deeply passionate about and sometimes even obsessed with [especially if you’re like me.]

I’m talking about sleep.

If I were to describe my sleep as a physical thing, then imagine this: an exquisite other worldly presence – ephemeral, wispy, fragile and elusive – something that seems, always, to be just an inch beyond grasp.

There’s little I’ve not done to keep this fleeting visitor by my bedside.

I wear an eye mask – not just any eye mask, but a special adjustable Velcro kind – I am also very particular about my mattress, and I have two pillows which I’ve marked with crosses so that my wife’s pillow doesn’t get mixed up with them.

So you can imagine how traumatising it is, when on my business travels I have to change beds. I am, beyond doubt, a housekeeper’s nightmare.

In fact, I think everyone at ITC-Welcomgroup is quite aware of my somnial predicament. So much, that whenever I’m visiting one of our properties I’m quite used to the kindly enquiries of my staff on how I slept during the night.

Once, however, to my surprise the GM of one of our hotels said to me with something akin to unshakeable confidence “Mr. Anand you must have slept very well.”

Turns out, he’d slept in my room the night before and had "the loveliest, deepest sleep."

Unfortunately, despite his initiative, an enterprising housekeeper had decided to install an alarm clock by the bedside after his test run. The story of my ordeal with that clock is for another time but I did appreciate his effort at trying to go that extra mile to ensure I slept well.

WelcomZest Lounge

This is exactly what we are about, at ITC-Welcomgroup. We understand what we are here for, and we do our best trying to bring it to you.

If one were to trace the history of hoteliering world over, one would arrive at the ubiquitous phenomenon of inn-keeping, in its oldest form. People travelled by horse from destination to destination and they stayed at inns by night to rest their tired limbs and horses. Essentially, they bought sleep.

Little has changed for today’s business traveller. In a different city and a different environment from morning until night, they basically need the hotel just to catch up on their sleep. You can offer the finest services and the greatest cuisines housed in the most stunning architecture, but if you haven’t slept well, the purpose of your visit is completely defeated.

In fact, many hotels have spoken about the bed that they’ve introduced. But do we sleep by bed alone?

I remember my stay at one such hotel, overseas, that had advertised its bed in glowing terms. But everything else about it was wrong. The air conditioning was noisy, there was light coming in from the window and the carpets were musty.

At ITC-Welcomgroup, we believe in the science of sleep, because sleep has a larger dimension, wherein all the senses come into play.

The sense of touch. The quality of the bed linen, the thread-count of the sheets, the quality of the bath linen, the feel of the carpet all contribute to how soothed you feel, once you’re in your room.

The sense of sound. We measure the decibel levels that come from the air conditioning. We check how well insulated the windows are. We even have a minimal prescribed sound level against which we check the decibel levels at the centre of the bed during peak traffic time, midnight and noon.

The sense of smell. Is there an aroma in the room? Good aromas are known to induce sleep, whereas a bad odour can dissuade sleep.

The sense of light – the amount of light that comes into the room – do the curtains and shutters allow you to block out every ray when you want?

Apart from these are the other elements that go into preparing for sleep – for instance a good shower where the pressure and temperature of the hot water are just right.

We have a sleep index which we monitor closely. We make it a point to ask our guests in the guest comment form if they slept well. We have a system to track reasons why people feel they didn’t sleep well.

The specially designed WelcomSlumber kit that you will find in our hotels, is the result of extensive research wherein apart from an eye mask and ear plugs we provide our guests with a selection of aroma-therapy products. We are working on a chocolate now, which induces sleep with carefully paired natural ingredients that are known to have a soothing effect on the system, gently. We have also developed something called a Dreamkerchief that relaxes you instantly, once you wipe your face with it.

You can even ask for a special foot massage ritual before you go to bed, in your room.

At ITC-Welcomgroup, we endeavour in every way to make sure that people sleep well, because we’re very aware that eventually, even with the most luxurious of hotels, as hoteliers our prime commitment is to your sleep.

Until my next post, thank you, dear reader, for allowing me to express the warmth of ITC-Welcomgroup.

Yours,
Nakul Anand

Reading through your article, I was trying to also put into perspective the few critical things that I look forward to when staying in a hotel, and while "sleep" does come in right at the top, the toilet also needs to be spacious and well laid out.

Great post. Like most business traveller, sleep and time are my most precious commodities. Have lost count of the numebr of times I have had to talk, irately, to managers of prominent hotel chains in India and abroad about in-room noise, seeping in from the corridor, filtering in through the windows and once, in one of Delhi's better known hotels, about a clock that beeped every hour! But happy to report that not once have I had to talk to an ITC Hotel manager. So I believe you Mr Anand when you speak about the science of sleep!

I have been the housekeeper's nightmare just like you and I may have earned some notoriety in your hotels which is what I use almost exclusively within the country. I agree with you as I have had similar bed troubles in my travels across the globe.
I need a hard bed. But not a board to sleep on. Maratha provides me the best of the beds. At Maurya also I have had a great experience. At Park, Chennai I once got a very good bed but the next time they couldn't figure out how it was done the last time. Well, I can live with that.
I can say that your thoughtfulness on the subject is outstanding and most commendable. And, in general I am happy to stay with ITC for nearly a decade.

I fully agree with what you have said on sleep, most of the time for business travelers hotel is more of a bed to sleep only and the details to which ITC goes to make your sleep comfortable is really comendable,Infact sleep at ITC freshens you up so much for the next day's work that the guilt of spending so much just for few hours of sleep is not felt.

  Dear Mr Anand,

Over the years I grew rather fond of staying at ITC hotels, if there was one in the town and available. Its hard to say if I visited all of them. But surely if there was one in the city, I preferred to be at an ITC hotel. And not because of the loyalty points as I am not really good at carrying a card!

Now I know why. The most recent experience a couple of months ago at an ITC hotel left me with an impression that there was something about the sleep. Of course, the little aroma bottle does work wonders.

Its interesting to discover the secret a couple decades after beginning to live it, however.

Your Tower Club was uniquely hospitable as well. For some time before retuning to the US your organization gave me the privilege of experiencing it. And it was always memorable indeed.

So, thank you so much for triggering something to write to you and warm regards.

  Dear Mr. Anand,
Not that I'm a frequent traveller, nor can I be of any use to further your business advantage, as I am back to being a student all over again. But I still couldn’t resist agreeing wholeheartedly with you on your views on sleep. Sleep tops my priority list so much so that even food, my personal favourite comes a close second.
I have visited a couple of top hotels in India and abroad, but haven’t yet found the right bed for me. With a history of a back-ache problem, either the beds are too soft for me or too tight. The biggest problem is finding the right pillow for trying to not have a stiff neck before the oh-so-important presentation the next day! One tosses and turns all night to no avail or unless gets tired of it and falls asleep. Another little irksome detail that I would like to draw your attention to is how sometimes the duvet is tucked under the mattress and one has to literally put up a fight to take it out. I am yet to spend a night at an ITC property, so I don’t really know how beds are done in your hotels. In general, I never thought that hotel beds would ever be able to prove me with the kind of sleep one can only dream of, but with your article, all of it seems closer to reality. I hope u market those chocolates soon.
I am sure with your expertise and experience all these details would have been taken care of.
Wishing you all the very best,
Warm regards,

  Dear Mr.Anand,

I have had the opportunity to stay in Hyderabad, Bangalore,Vadodara in your chain of hotels and have all good words to say about the comforts & hospitality.
One suggestion I wish to make is that due to belief in vastu tenets I generally prefer sleeping with head towards south and toes towards north. Invariable sleeping the other way around gives disturbed sleep, therefore have to carry compass....If this aspect can be taken care of it will be the ultimate in science of sleeping.

  Dear Mr Anand,

Just two points from my end -

Point 1: Its really nice to know that a person like you with so much of responsibility still takes out time to acknowledge all the comments left on the site. Esp when in today's world getting an acknowledgement is an accomplisment in itself. Really appreciate all your efforts put into that.

Point 2: Sleep ... technically the information you provided was fantastic and I am sure everybody would appreciate this extra doze. But frankly sleeping I never understand the fuss associated with "SLEEP". Just try working hard from morning 5 to night 10 and then see how well you sleep. No one would ever need to ask you again and even the absence of pillows from the bed would go unaccounted.

Sincerely,
Supriya
